Refugee support – launch of community sponsorship scheme – at Northampton on Tuesday 17th October

October 17, 2017 @ 7:30 pm - 9:00 pm

Transform the lives of a refugee family and transform your community

Are you one of the many people in Britain who would like to help people fleeing war and persecution?

Do want to do more than just send a donation to a refugee charity or sign a petition?

Do you feel you, your friends and neighbours could welcome a refugee family into your community, help them settle and build a new life?

If so, the Community Sponsorship programme could be for you

Sponsorship is a new programme through which faith and community groups take on direct responsibility for resettling a refugee family from the Syrian conflict in their neighbourhood. The UK scheme draws inspiration from a similar one in Canada where 300,000 refugees have been welcomed through sponsorship since 1979.  It has been successfully pioneered by community groups from Bude in Cornwall to Flixton in Greater Manchester, from Hackney in East London to Fishguard in West Wales.

“As one of the first community sponsors in the UK, I can confirm that the experience has been completely transformative for my community. It gave us the opportunity to do something hopeful when weren’t sure how to help and has brought together different elements in our community in extraordinary ways. Whatever we have given has been returned ten-fold by the most remarkable, inspirational and resilient family I have ever met.”

Citizens UK is working with local church and community leaders to hold the Northamptonshire launch event for the Community Sponsorship scheme from 7.30pm on Tuesday 17th October in the Board Room of the Senate Building on the Park Campus of the University of Northampton. We are very grateful to the University for offering to host us and provide refreshments. A map is here: Park Campus and Reserved Parking. Parking will be available in Car Park 4 (Reserved Parking) that evening.  Anyone arriving by car should press the buzzer next to the barrier to car park 4 and say they are attending this meeting and the barrier will rise and they can park and make their way into the building.   The building is quite close to bus stops as well.
